Symptoms include:
-
Pain on the outside of the knee
-
Increased pain when running, cycling, or using stairs
-
Repetitive popping noise at area of pain with activity
If you experience any or all of these symptoms then you could be suffering from a condition called
Iliotibial Band (ITB) Syndrome, most commonly seen in runners and cyclists as they repetitively use
a larger knee range of motion.
Pain is typically felt on the outside of the knee and symptoms typically increase with activity and
subside with rest. Many times runners will notice that the pain will not begin until they are a couple
of miles into their run. While this condition can be a result of a tight Iliotibial Band there are almost
always other primary factors. In these cases therapy to the IT Band itself will only provide minimal results
and will never alleviate the problem completely. Poor function of the feet, ankles, knees, hips, and/or low
back can indirectly lead to a tight IT Band and without proper diagnosis and treatment of these areas the knee
pain will continue to reappear.
How can Performance Chiropractic help?
-
Proper diagnosis of the primary cause of the ITB Syndrome
-
Active Release Technique (ART) to the soft tissue structures of the feet, ankles, knees, hips, and even
low back to restore normal function, decrease stress to the injured area, reduce scar tissue, and promote
healing
-
Chiropractic adjustments to restore proper motion
-
Ultrasound to help reduce inflammation
-
Stretching and Exercises to prevent condition from returning

After just 3 visits to Performance Chiropractic, I learned that these injuries are all related.
While Dr. Barney and staff began addressing my IT Band issues in my knee, it became clear that my
foot and hip were involved in this series of injuries and they began addressing these root cause
areas.
